Who We Are
Traditional heart. Modern soul. Oheb Shalom belongs to all of us.
Oheb Shalom is an egalitarian, inclusive, diverse, and multi-generational community that embraces Jewish tradition in the 21st century.
Our values include:
- Celebrating the joy and wonder of being alive and being connected to the world
- Finding intimacy and connection in the presence of each other, thus forming lifetime friendships as we embrace our common Jewish identity
- Committing to Jewish education as a lifelong, intergenerational endeavor
- Identifying with and supporting Jewish communities in the USA, Israel, and across the globe
- Improving the world through social action and advocacy for social justice.
We welcome the diversity of individuals of all color, race, sexual orientation, abilities, special needs, and gender identity. We respect each individual’s personal Jewish journey with compassion, consideration, and kindness.
Founded on Prince Street in Newark, our congregation and its members have lived in and served Essex County and the broader community for 160 years. Read about our history here.
We are Oheb.
We are proud of our multi-generational and diverse membership, made up of people from all ages and backgrounds who seek a Jewish community – a place to call home. We host a vibrant and inclusive religious school as well as one of the area’s most respected preschools.
We believe that each person matters. Our clergy, staff, and leadership are committed to fostering growth in the enjoyment of Jewish life and learning. We’ll help you in any way we can to reach those goals.
The true strength and vitality of our congregation are found in the individuals who walk through our doors. Let us inspire you.
