FAQ

Does Mickey Fried Preschool offer private education in addition to the South Orange-Maplewood School District Preschool Expansion Program?

At this time, Mickey Fried Preschool offers only public preschool for students who have been placed here by the District’s Preschool Lottery.

How many classrooms does MFPS have, and how many students are in each class?

We currently have 5 preschool classrooms. All SOMSD Preschool Program classrooms allow for up to 15 students, all mixed ages of PK-3 and PK-4.

What teaching style do teachers implement?

SOMSD Preschool Classrooms utilize Tools of the Mind, which focuses on intentional make-believe play and building foundational skills your preschooler will need for school and beyond.

What are school hours? Do you have early care/aftercare?

School hours are 8:15 am-2:15 pm. We offer early care (application) beginning at 7:30am and aftercare (application) from 2:15-5:30 pm. Spaces in early care and aftercare are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

I might need early care or aftercare on occasion. Can my child come early or stay late on an as-needed basis?

Yes! We allow drop-in early care and/or after-care as space allows. You will be charged an hourly rate.

Are you a nut-free school?

Yes!  Students may not bring foods containing peanuts or tree nuts to school. This includes (but is not limited to) whole peanuts/tree nuts, nut butters, cereals, granola or granola bars, or any other type of product containing nuts.

My child has an allergy, or has asthma, or another medical condition. How is this accommodated in school?

If your child is placed in our school, you must indicate in your registration paperwork that your child has an allergy or other medical condition. In addition, you must submit the Care Plan for Children with Special Health Needs included in your registration packet. If it is a food allergy, we will kindly ask other parents in your child’s class to avoid sending that food in their child’s snack or lunch. If your child requires an EpiPen, Auvi-Q, or inhaler, you must provide one with the prescription label attached for the school to keep on hand in case of emergencies.

Do children have to be potty-trained to attend school?

No, children do not need to be potty trained to attend Mickey Fried Preschool.  We will assist in the process if your child is nearing readiness. If your child wears diapers or pull-ups, we kindly ask that you provide a supply of these as well as wipes and replenish as needed.

Can I tour the school?

Yes! Please contact Cara Bruen, Director, via email at carabruen@ohebshalom.org or call 973-762-7067 to schedule a tour.
