Annual Funding Appeal

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the AFA? Why do we need it?

Synagogues like Oheb Shalom have long operated like co-ops with limited dedicated staff, where members share in the operational, programmatic, and financial responsibilities to keep dues as low and accessible as possible. So, how do we sustain our community? We rely on financial contributions over and above dues. We hope that if many of our members can give more, they will give more. This model reflects a deep-rooted tradition of inclusivity and collective commitment to sustaining vibrant Jewish life for all.

AFA stands for Annual Funding Appeal, formerly known as the Free Will Appeal. Our synagogue’s annual operating budget is approximately $1.9 mm (excluding Universal Pre-K). This is funded primarily through membership dues, endowment income, and voluntary donations from our members — that’s the AFA, “Funding our Oheb community together.” This funding model sustains our community, but it still leaves a gap — which brings us to the next question.

How much does it cost to operate Oheb Shalom per Household?

With approximately 300 member households, it costs about $6,300 per household to operate Oheb. Even with $3,600 in dues plus $180 in security fees, costs aren’t fully covered. After combining all our income sources — membership dues, endowment income, and other revenue — we still face a shortfall of about $1,000 per household.

That’s where the AFA comes in: your contributions above dues close this gap and keep our programs, services, and building running. For perspective, annual dues roughly cover payroll, while all other operational, programming, and service expenses depend on member donations.

How many members give to the AFA?

Approximately 44% of our community contributed last year to the AFA, with gifts starting at $18.  Our goal is to move closer to 100% participation – because every gift matters and every dollar helps sustain our spiritual home.

What’s this Matching Gift Program?

We are thrilled to share that several of our generous donors have agreed to match up to $15,000 in total for new or increased donations with a dollar-for-dollar match. That means if you’re giving for the first time — or increasing your gift — your donation will go twice as far!

What is the “right” amount to give?

Donation levels range from just $18 to over $10,000.  Our Goal is to achieve 100% participation for the AFA initiative.

We also recognize that every household’s financial situation is different. We know that our annual shortfall is about $1,000 per household. Last year, about 44% of households donated. Of those, 50% gave $1,000 or more, accounting for 94% of all donations. Said simply, 22% of households met or exceeded the annual shortfall of $1,000 per household, accounting for 94% of all donations.

We encourage those who can do so to donate at a level that bridges this gap — and if you’re able to give more, your generosity helps cover households who cannot give.

These donations can be paid at any point, including year-end or throughout the fiscal year (July to June) as part of a monthly payment plan.  We appreciate knowing your pledge as soon as possible for planning purposes but the money can be paid based on your schedule.

Those who give more than $1,800 are recognized during the year with a special get-together.

Can I direct my donation to a specific area?

Absolutely!  You can designate your gift to one of five meaningful categories:

  • General Operating Fund
  • Zeman/Youth
  • Music, Ritual, and Holidays
  • Programming, including Social Action and Adult Education
  • Building and Business Operations

If donations to a designated area exceed its needs (what a wonderful outcome!), the excess will support the General Operating Fund, which benefits our community as a whole.

I really want to donate but can’t afford to.  What else can I do?

There are many ways to contribute to our flourishing community.

Show up.  Join us for Shabbat services, High Holy Days, family programs, and events like the annual fundraiser. Read Torah, if you can.  Be part of the energy and spirit that defines Oheb.

Volunteer.  Our synagogue has an incredibly dedicated, but lean, staff.  Much of the programming relies on the help of passionate member volunteers.  Whether it’s a single hour or an ongoing role, your time makes a difference. Be the next generation of leaders in our community.  Consider joining one of the many committees that aligns with your interests and schedule.

Help grow our membership. The more members we have, the more efficiently we can spread out and cover our costs. Every new member helps reduce our overall shortfall. Referring even one member is a major contribution — financially and spiritually.

Supporting Oheb isn’t only about money. It’s about showing up, stepping in, and helping us grow.

I want to learn more.  Who do I contact?

This year’s AFA is co-chaired by Stan Spiegelman and Paul Schechner.  Our Vice President of Fundraising, Gloria Aaron is always available to answer questions. You can also reach out to our President, Lorraine
Survis
, or to our Executive Director, Michelle Strassberg – they are happy to help!

Speak with us directly: contact any member of the AFA Committee or the synagogue office. We’re happy to accept verbal pledges too!

Thank you for helping Oheb Shalom thrive — for this generation and the next.
